This is an advanced course in photovoltaic installation. This course covers leading technologies in the solar industry, photovoltaic system safety and PPE requirements, electrical circuits and multimeter practices, site evaluations and data collection, PV module function and build, charge controller and inverter operation, battery systems, and PV system wiring and code requirements. In addition, this course will also include the ETA certification program in which successful completion results in students earning their Photovoltaic Installer - Level I (PVI1) certification.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Discuss the solar energy industry.
  2. Demonstrate photovoltaic system safety.
  3. Review electrical circuit fundamentals.
  4. Practice solar site evaluation and data collection.
  5. Understand the physical construction of PV modules.
  6. Learn battery maintenance, wiring, and charge cycles.
  7. Examine charge controller configuration.
  8. Understand inverters and their functions.
  9. Learn PV wiring and code regulations.
  10. Design and size PV systems.
  11. Learn installation techniques for solar array mounting systems.
  12. Practice maintenance and troubleshooting of PV systems.
  13. Attain readiness to take the ETA Photovoltaic Installer - Level I (PVI1) Certification exam. [h]
