HIMT 101 - Introduction to Health Information Technology

This course provides the opportunity for the investigation of career opportunities, ethics, history, and functions of the health information management profession. Provides an overview of the organization of healthcare delivery, including various types of healthcare institutions, accreditation standards, licensure and regulatory agencies, and payment and reimbursement systems. Introduces basic concepts and terminology for data accuracy, security, privacy, and confidentiality in manual and computerized systems.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Explain the history and evolution of the health information profession.
  2. Explore the AHIMA website to identify certifications, careers, and tools available to assist health information management professionals.
  3. Examine the evolution of the medical record as it relates to past and current healthcare initiatives.
  4. Describe healthcare organizations from the perspective of key stakeholders.
  5. Define policies, regulations, and standards to the management of information.
  6. Describe compliance of health record content within the health organization.
  7. Recognize code sets, clinical terminologies, and classification systems utilized in healthcare along with the reason for using code sets, clinical terminologies, and classification systems such as UHDDS, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and SNOMED.
  8. Recognize components of revenue cycle management and clinical documentation improvement.
  9. Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of various providers and disciplines, to support documentation requirements, throughout the continuum of healthcare.
  10. Summarize health information leadership roles.
  11. Explain the impact of policy on health care.
  12. Identify processes of workforce training for healthcare organizations.
  13. Recognize the types of organizations, services, and personnel and their relationships across the health care delivery system.
  14. Identify ethical standards of practice in relation to the profession and the AHIMA Code of Ethics.
  15. Identify how cultural issues affect health, healthcare quality, cost and HIM.
