NRSG 125 - LPN Transition to ASN Lab PREREQUISITES: Admission to the LPN to ASN Transition Track of the ASN Program COREQUISITES: NRSG 122 - Introduction to ASN Transition (only required if a graduate of Ivy Tech’s Practical Nursing program greater than 2 years ago OR if a graduate from a Practical Nursing program outside Ivy Tech). Simulated patient care provides an opportunity to demonstrate the psychomotor skills necessary to provide nursing care to meet patient needs. Emphasis is placed on the use of standard precautions, provision of a safe care environment, and maintenance of patient privacy and principles of documentation. Students will validate previously learned skills and assessment.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate nursing skills utilized in meeting needs of patients through the effective use of technology and standardized practices that support safety and quality and reduce risk of harm to self or others. (SLO 1, 3)
- Demonstrate competencies and skills necessary to maintain a safe patient care environment to minimize risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance. (SLO 1, 2)
- Demonstrate awareness of the need to protect patient privacy, explore ethical and legal implications of patient-centered care, facilitate informed patient consent for care, and appreciate shared decision-making with empowered patients and families. (SLO 4, 5, 6)
- Utilize principles of infection control, standard precautions, and evidence-based practice when performing psychomotor skills to demonstrate knowledge of basic scientific methods and processes and value the concept of EBP as integral to determining best clinical practice. (SLO 2, 4, 7)
- Apply fundamental principles of written and electronic health records documentation with progression toward documentation of more advanced nursing care. (SLO 3, 5)
- Safely demonstrate complex nursing skills and make judgments in practice, substantiated with evidence, that integrate nursing science in the provision of safe, quality care and that promote the health of patients within a family and community context. (SLO 1, 4, 5, 7)
- Demonstrate competencies, in techniques necessary to create a culture of safety, communicate observations or concerns related to hazards and errors to patients, families and the health care team, and value their own role in preventing errors. (SLO 4, 5, 7)
- Demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques that promote advocacy for patients and families in ways that promote self-determination, integrity, and ongoing growth as human beings. (SLO 5, 6)
- Demonstrate proficiency in drug dosage calculations and medication administration. (SLO 1, 7)
- Describe how technology and information management are related to the quality and safety of patient care and support clinical decision-making, error prevention, and care coordination. (SLO 1, 3, 4)
