NRSG 200 - Complex Medical-Surgical Nursing for the ASN PREREQUISITES: NRSG 106 - Pharmacology for Nursing ; and, depending on program track, must complete one of the following: (a) NRSG 122 - Introduction to ASN Transition (LPN to ASN track students who graduated from Ivy Tech greater than 2 years ago or who graduated from a Practical Nursing program outside Ivy Tech); OR (b) NRSG 123 - Transition to ASN Lab/Clinical (Paramedic to ASN track students); OR, (c) NRSG 110 - Medical Surgical Nursing II and NRSG 111 - Medical Surgical Nursing II Clinical (ASN Traditional track students), MATH 123 , MATH 135 , MATH 136 , MATH 137 , MATH 200 or higher COREQUISITES: NRSG 201 - Complex Medical Surgical Nursing for the ASN Clinical PROGRAM: Nursing CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2021
Applies previous knowledge of the etiology and pathophysiology of complex alterations in health in understanding the patient’s health care needs within the context of all body systems. Examines the role of the registered nurse in applying the nursing process and implementing the ordered plan of treatment in acute care settings. Examines leadership skills in a variety of healthcare settings.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Analyze the role of the registered nurse in applying the nursing process to the care of adults experiencing complex alterations in health. (SLO 1, 7)
- Describe the ordered plan of treatment, including appropriate evidence-based practices for adults experiencing complex alterations in health. (SLO 2, 4)
- Define the unique health care needs of patients with critical and life-threatening alterations in health. (SLO 1, 4, 7)
- Analyze the health teaching needs of adults and their significant others through the application of adult learning theories. (SLO 1, 2, 4, 5)
- Compare and contrast delegation and leadership skills in a variety of health care settings as they apply to the role of the RN. (SLO 1, 7, 8)
- Evaluate delivery of nursing care and when it should be modified to improve quality patient care to culturally diverse adults experiencing complex alterations in health. (SLO 1, 2, 5, 6)

- Philosophical concepts related to individuals, environment, nursing, health, and the nursing education process
- Adult learning theories
- Nursing process for adults experiencing complex alterations in health within the context of all body systems, including emergent, critical care, and trauma situations
- Ordered plan of treatment for adults experiencing complex alterations in health within the context of all body systems, including emergent, critical care, and trauma situations
- Leadership and delegation for the associate degree nurse
- High acuity care environments
- Delivery of care in diverse cultural contexts
