OPTI 151 - Ophthalmic Procedures PREREQUISITES: Program Chair Approval PROGRAM: Optician and Eye Care CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2019
This course is designed to present the basic fundamentals, terminology, instrumentation, and practical procedures used in evaluating the visual system. Topics include patient pre-exam testing, correctly recording the data of test results and interacting with different patient types.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Define the role of the technician as an ophthalmic assistant.
- Identify Ophthalmic Technology and the abbreviations used in charting and recording test results.
- Skillfully and accurately collect data to be used by the optometrist for diagnostic purposes.
- Take a patient case history.
- Perform visual acuity test using the Snellen chart.
- Measure and assess a patient’s stereo acuity and color vision.
- Measure a patient’s interpupillary distance.
- Analyze external appearance and assess pupillary function.
- Evaluate and record the function of the extraocular muscles and binocular alignment.
- Detect and measure the misalignment of the visual axis under binocular viewing conditions.
- Perform non-automated visual field testing.
- Evaluate and record a patient’s ability to converge & accommodate at near.
- Detect the patient’s dominant eye.
- Demonstrate use of autorefractor and the phoropter.
- Correctly employ a keratometer to measure and record a patient’s corneal curvature.
- Calculate astigmatism using keratometry findings.
- Interact and work with special patient groups.
- Effectively assess the visual system.

- Use of automated and non-automated testing.
- Effective communication with patients and staff.
