OPTI 151 - Ophthalmic Procedures

This course is designed to present the basic fundamentals, terminology, instrumentation, and practical procedures used in evaluating the visual system. Topics include patient pre-exam testing, correctly recording the data of test results and interacting with different patient types.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Define the role of the technician as an ophthalmic assistant.
  2. Identify Ophthalmic Technology and the abbreviations used in charting and recording test results.
  3. Skillfully and accurately collect data to be used by the optometrist for diagnostic purposes.
  4. Take a patient case history.
  5. Perform visual acuity test using the Snellen chart.
  6. Measure and assess a patient’s stereo acuity and color vision.
  7. Measure a patient’s interpupillary distance.
  8. Analyze external appearance and assess pupillary function.
  9. Evaluate and record the function of the extraocular muscles and binocular alignment.
  10. Detect and measure the misalignment of the visual axis under binocular viewing conditions.
  11. Perform non-automated visual field testing.
  12. Evaluate and record a patient’s ability to converge & accommodate at near.
  13. Detect the patient’s dominant eye.
  14. Demonstrate use of autorefractor and the phoropter.
  15. Correctly employ a keratometer to measure and record a patient’s corneal curvature.
  16. Calculate astigmatism using keratometry findings.
  17. Interact and work with special patient groups.
  18. Effectively assess the visual system.

  • Patient pretesting & recording results.
  • Eye screening programs.
  • Use of automated and non-automated testing.
  • Effective communication with patients and staff.
