WELD 207 - Gas Metal Arc (MIG) Welding

PROGRAM: Industrial Technology
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1
LAB HOURS MIN: 4
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2022

This course includes various gas metal welding (GMAW) processes including microwire, flux-core, inner shield, and submerged arc with emphasis on metal inert gas welding. This course is structured to include ample time to practice on GMAW processes including techniques of welding in all positions on various thickness of metal.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

1. Demonstrate safe practices involved in GMAW. [c]

2. Describe constant voltage and wire feed welding processes. [e,f]

3. Demonstrate proper safety procedure in removal and refitting of gas cylinders to machines. [e,f]

4. Demonstrate removal and refitment of consumable spool. [e,f]

5. Demonstrate proper inspection, setup, and breakdown of GMAW equipment. [e,f]

6. Identify and disassemble/reassemble all parts of the GMAW gun/torch. [e,f]

7. Identify and GMAW five basic weld joints. [e,f]

8. Identify heat input and metal distortion. [e,f]

9.  GMAW in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and the overhead position. [e,f]

10.  GMAW with hard wire using short circuit, globular, and spray method welding. [e,f]

11. Make single and multipass GMAW welds. [e,f]

12.  Identify the gases used in GMAW . [e,f]

13. Perform routine maintenance on gas metal arc welding equipment. [e,f]

14.  Demonstrate ability to read and interpret technical documents. [b,e]

15. Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to course. [a]

Note: The letters () after each objective reflect the program to course mapping process required by ATMAE Accreditation.
