This course is designed to enhance the working knowledge of traditional methods of craftsmanship and contemporary methods and materials for masonry preservation repairs. The core modules include Fundamentals of Historic Preservation, Mortars in Preservation, Introduction to Architecture & Building Technology and Historic Structure Survey & Condition Repair. The program is designed to elevate the level of workmanship of the students and allow them to maintain a competitive edge in the growing restoration field.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Discuss the history of the preservation movement and the current trends in the field of preservation.
- Have a more in-depth understanding of the four treatment approaches: Preservation, Restoration, Stabilization and Rehabilitation.
- Discuss an overview of basic architectural vocabulary.
- Discuss the characteristics of lime-based mortars, natural cements, pozzalons and hydraulic based mortars.
- Identify and recognize design and construction problems that may occur in historic masonry construction.
- Select appropriate repair and replacement treatments for deteriorated masonry or solve original design, detail and construction problems.
- Examine the properties of various building materials and the mechanism of deterioration.
- Discuss the types of research, survey, and testing that takes place before physical restoration work begins.
