ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College

1. Establish a systematic approach to reading for study that utilizes a student’s learning style.
2. Read with increased flexibility and effectiveness in order to understand diverse materials including, college-level texts.
3. Interpret visual rhetoric such as graphs, tables, charts, and other visual images.
4. Process text through summarizing, outlining, mapping, and note taking.
5. Develop personal and academic vocabulary through effective use of word attack skills and context clues.
6. Use vocabulary reference materials such as a dictionary, thesaurus, and computer aids skillfully.
7. Identify and differentiate between stated and implied main ideas and supporting details.
8. Identify patterns of organization in a reading passage and recognize the roles of transitions in clarifying the pattern.
9. Distinguish fact from opinion.
10. Draw appropriate inferences from what is read.
11. Identify author’s purpose and tone and distinguish between literal and figurative language with emphasis on recognizing connotation.
12. Use critical reading skills to recognize bias and evaluate text.
13. Use appropriate strategies for locating, reading, processing, and evaluating resources for scholarly and career-related research.

GRADING POLICY
A course grade of C or higher is required for successful completion. Students who do not meet this standard are encouraged to retake the COMPASS or ASSET placement exam.
