INDT 102 - Introduction to Print Reading


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better MATH 0XX

Provides an introduction to reading and interpreting machine shop symbols, welding blueprints and working drawings used in trades and crafts. Focuses on dimension, shape, fabrication and assembly. Applies basic mathematics to the solution of print and performance problems.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate a knowledge of blueprints with attention to signs, symbols and abbreviations. [f]
  2. Read the scale on a steel rule. [f]
  3. Identify the various lines found on prints. [f]
  4. Interpret the various views found on prints. [f]
  5. Interpret various location dimensions found on prints including circles, arcs and angles. [f]
  6. Interpret external and internal threads. [f]
  7. Develop understanding of the metric system. [a]
  8. Interpret tolerances designated on prints. [f]
  9. Interpret surface finish symbols and specifications. [f]
  10. Interpret geometric tolerance symbols and their usage on prints. [f]
  11. Interpret standard machine finish symbols found on prints. [f]
  12. Interpret A.W.S. welding symbols found on prints.[f]
  13. Interpret piping symbols used on prints. [f]
  14. Interpret instrumentation symbols used on prints. [f]
