VISC 102 - Raster Graphics I


PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in   ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing.

Introduces students to raster-based editing with Adobe Photoshop, input technology, image manipulation, and digital capture devices. Students will learn to communicate concepts and ideas through design and editing techniques.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE:

This class makes use of industry-standard Adobe software. Students will NOT be able to complete the coursework without the use of Adobe software. Only students enrolled in Visual Communications courses that use Adobe software have been assigned an Adobe license. Not all students will have the ability to access Adobe software at home. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the latest Adobe software.  Review the IvyService & Support Knowledge Base article: How to Access Adobe Software at Home to learn how to access this software. 

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Please note that not every computer can run Adobe software. Verify your system can operate Adobe applications through the Adobe System Requirements website. We highly recommend computers with an Intel core processor, 64-bit support, 8GB of memory (16GB preferred), and a 250GB hard drive. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the minimum system requirements.

 

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Learn and employ methods of raster-based editing utilizing Adobe Photoshop.
  2. Operate image input devices.
  3. Explain the differences between various graphic file formats and image resolutions.
  4. Produce designs that demonstrate an understanding of layering, selections, and masking.
  5. Create designs that demonstrate an understanding of image compositing.
  6. Create designs that use the elements and principles of design.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to solve communication design problems.
  8. Demonstrate effective integrations of brainstorming and sketching into the design process.
  9. Apply the rules of typography to designs.
  10. Demonstrate a variety of imaging methods in application to class projects.
  11. Be able to assess work constructively and effectively through critique.
