NSGA 142 - Health & Wellness Lifespan


PREREQUISITES: Admission to Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) Program
PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: NSGA 140 Intro to Nursing Concepts and Clinical Judgment, NSGA 143 Health and Wellness Across the Lifespan Lab

Introduces students to the role of the registered nurse in providing for basic psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs that foster health and wellness for the patient.  Provides an overview in fundamental principles of holistic assessment, therapeutic communication and health promotion for patients across the lifespan.  Examines the responsibility of the nurse as a caregiver, educator, and facilitator in patient centered care for individuals of diverse backgrounds across the lifespan.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  1. Identify therapeutic communication techniques that develop the nurse-patient relationship and promote intra- and interprofessional collaboration with health care teams. (SLO 4)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge in assessment of patients across the lifespan, understanding normal and abnormal variations of findings while recognizing patients and their families as unique individuals with varied preferences, values, and needs. (SLO 2 & SLO 6)
  3. Discuss the impact of health promotion, disease prevention, and health disparities to promote healthy outcomes in a variety of diverse groups across the lifespan.  (SLO 3 & SLO 6)
  4. Describe concepts utilized to promote diversity and a culture of caring and advocacy that demonstrates respect for individual patient preferences and respect for individual values and needs. (SLO 1)
  5. Identify basic nutritional concepts of patients across the lifespan. (SLO 1)
  6. Identify cognitive and psychosocial development across the lifespan and the nurse’s role when caring for patients with alterations in growth and development. (SLO 1)
  7. Describe the role of the nurse as an educator, counselor, and facilitator in patient centered care.  (SLO 1 & SLO 5)
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of factors that affect patient mobility and interventions that promote safe patient handling and movement across the life span. (SLO 1 & SLO 3)
