Examines the registered nurse’s role related to pharmacotherapeutics, medication administration, safety, and informatics across diverse populations and the lifespan.  Uses evidence-based practice to guide the application of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics as it pertains to the registered nurse.   Demonstrates medication administration and use of electronic health records. Demonstrates application of dosage calculations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Apply individualized teaching-learning associated with medication administration across the lifespan, including consideration of diversity, ethnicity and health equity in the development of the nursing plan of care. (SLO 1 & SLO 2)
  2. Demonstrate safe medication administration within the scope of a registered nurse. (SLO 1 & SLO 6)  
  3. Identify common medication errors and explore medication error prevention strategies.  (SLO 3)
  4. Understand pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications for patients across the lifespan. (SLO 1 & SLO 2)
  5. Utilize appropriate communication and delegation in collaboration with the inter/intraprofessional team for management of patient medication administration needs. (SLO 4 & SLO 5)
  6. Perform dosage calculations to support proper medication administration within the scope of the registered nurse. (SLO 1)
