NSGP 121 - Pharm & Dosage Calc Lab


PREREQUISITES: NSGP 104 Essentials of Nursing Concepts and Clinical Judgment, APHY 101 Anatomy & Physiology I

Examines the licensed practical nurse role related to pharmacotherapeutics, medication administration, safety, and informatics.  Uses evidence-based practice to guide the application of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics as it pertains to the licensed practical nurse.  Demonstrates medication administration and use of electronic health records.  Demonstrates application of dosage calculations.

 

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Utilize the principles of individualized teaching-learning associated with medication administration across the lifespan, including consideration of diversity, ethnicity and health equity as a contributor to the nursing plan of care. (SLO 2)
  2. Demonstrate safe medication administration within the scope of a licensed practical nurse. (SLO 1 & SLO 6)
  3. Identify common medication errors and collaborate with the inter/intraprofessional team to explore medication error prevention strategies.  (SLO 3)
  4. Understand pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications. (SLO 1 & SLO 2)
  5. Utilize appropriate communication in collaboration with the inter/intraprofessional team for management of patient medication administration needs. (SLO 4 & SLO 5)
  6. Perform dosage calculations for proper medication administration in accordance within the scope of the licensed practical nurse. (SLO 1)
