About the Program
The Surgical Technology program is very demanding but with our high quality of training, you will be prepared to enter the work force in the surgery field, labor and delivery, as a Surgical Assistant, or at Central Sterile Supply. This is a very rewarding career in the Health Science Field. It is not nursing; you do a very specific technical job and work under the RN and Surgeon. Our program requires more than 900 hands-on hours of training where you will spend your time in a real operating room.
The Surgical Technology program is a selective admission program. When you apply to the College, you will be accepted into Healthcare Specialist with a concentration in Surgical Technology while you complete the prerequisite requirements. All applicants are required to take the HESI exam. Click here to schedule the HESI Exam. The Surgical Technology program accepts a limited number of students each year and there is a separate application process.

Students who are admitted to the program will be required to pay for and submit to a criminal background check, drug testing and physical exam. The details and process will be provided at an orientation. Please contact the program faculty for more detailed information.
Our Graduates
Graduates will be able to find local jobs that pay good salaries. They are able to work in surgery, labor and delivery. They may also work at Central Sterile Supply or as a Surgical Assistant.

Accreditation
Clinical Case Requirements for Graduation
Upon successful completion of the Surgical Technology Program, the student will have fulfilled the clinical case requirements as established by the 6th edition of the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology published by the Association of Surgical Technologists.
Students must complete a minimum of 120 cases as delineated below.
- General Surgery cases
- Students must complete a minimum of 30 cases in General Surgery; 20 which must be performed in the First Scrub Role. The remaining 10 cases may be performed in either the First or Second Scrub Role.
- B. Specialty cases
- Students must complete a minimum of90 cases in various surgical specialties, excluding General Surgery; 60 which must be performed in the First Scrub Role. The additional 30 cases may be performed in either the First or Second Scrub Role.
- A minimum of 60 surgical specialty cases must be performed in the First Scrub Role and distributed amongst a minimum of four surgical specialties.
- A minimum of 10 cases in the First Scrub Role must be completed in each of the required minimum of four surgical specialties (40 cases total required).
- The additional 20 cases in the First Scrub Role may be distributed amongst any one surgical specialty or multiple surgical specialties.
- The remaining 30 surgical specialty cases may be performed in any surgical specialty either in the First or Second Scrub Role.
Columbus
PASS RATES
In compliance with the 2015 CAAHEP-ARC/STSA Standards, Ivy Tech Community College Columbus Surgical Technology Program is required to publish the Outcome Assessment Exam pass-rate on its website. The Outcome Assessment Exam for the Surgical Technology Program is called the Certified Surgical Technologist Exam. The pass rate for the 2019 Surgical Technology Program graduates was 100%.
The Surgical Technology program at Ivy Tech’s Columbus Campus is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA).
