WHY CHOOSE THIS PROGRAM?

The Secondary Education associate degree offers students the opportunity to complete the first two years of coursework toward an eventual teaching degree in biology or mathematics. Both of these teaching areas have been identified by the Indiana Department of Education as having current and
projected shortages of qualified teachers. Students who complete the bachelor’s degree and teacher certification after transferring from Ivy Tech will be in a very strong position to land a teaching position either in Indiana or elsewhere in the country.

About the Program

The Secondary Education degree at Ivy Tech provides students with instruction in general education, introductory courses in teaching preparation, and specific courses in the teaching track of biology or mathematics. This coursework includes observation experiences in the classroom, and a range of education courses such as Introduction to Education, Child and Adolescent Development, Educational Psychology, and Multicultural Education.

Our Graduates

An Associate of Science in Secondary Education is primarily designed to prepare students to transfer successfully to a four-year institution where students will earn their Bachelor’s degree in their content area with an education concentration. Once the bachelor’s degree is earned and students have passed the qualifying exams, they will be awarded their teaching certification. Many of our graduates will transfer to an Indiana-supported four year university to complete the degree. Graduates will also have the option of enrolling at a private institution that accepts our transfer pathway.

Transfer Partners

Graduates of our Associate of Science (AS) degree can transfer seamlessly to a four-year institution through our “Transfer as a Junior” program. To learn more about our Transfer as a Junior programs, and how they can save you money, visit our TSAP page.  Please keep in mind, you will also need to be admitted to the four-year institution you intend to transfer into. Admission is not guaranteed just by enrolling in a Transfer as a Junior program.

If you would like to continue your education after completing your Ivy Tech degree, we have several four-year transfer partnerships in place. Talk to your transfer advocate for more information about transfer opportunities

Completion Guides

Completion guides provide the recommended path to graduation, broken out by 8-week term. Courses are also numbered to show an overall number for students taking fewer classes at a time. Please consult with your advisor to determine which classes are the best option for you to take.
