Provides a study of human physiology for students entering health-oriented fields. Emphasizes the study of the function of cells, the nervous, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, urinary, digestive and endocrine systems, and their homeostatic mechanisms and system interaction. Focuses laboratory exercises on clinically relevant measurement of human function.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student, through lecture and laboratory activities, will be expected to:

1. Correctly use proper clinical terminology to describe the physiology of the human body.

2. Describe the detailed physiological mechanisms essential to human life.

3. Describe cellular functions and the role of the plasma membrane.

4. Describe the function of enzymes and their role in chemical reactions.

5. Describe the physiology of cellular respiration.

6. Demonstrate a working knowledge of interactions between cells and the extracellular environment, and how cells communicate.

7. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

8. Describe the function of the general and special senses.

9. Describe hormonal control of systemic function.

10. Describe the physiology of contraction in the three muscle types.

11. Describe the physiology of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.

12. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the functions of the immune system.

13. Describe the physiology of the respiratory system including gas transport.

14. Describe the maintenance and regulation of the composition of fluid compartments.

15. Describe the processes of nutrient digestion, absorption and utilization.

16. Perform basic laboratories procedures and collect basic clinical physiological measurements from self and others as appropriate suitable to a 200-level physiology course as it pertains to the listed course content.
