DMSI 203 - OB/Gyn Sonography II and Lab PREREQUISITES: DMSI 103 - OB/Gyn Sonography I and Lab PROGRAM: Diagnostic Medical Sonography CREDIT HOURS MIN: 4 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2022
This course will continue to build on the knowledge acquired in DMSI 103 along with learning pathologic indications and second and third trimester obstetric scanning. The student will learn pathophysiologic effects and the sonographic appearance of teratogens, genetic aberrations, as well as maternal complications. Complication and risk factors in the second and third trimester pregnancy, procedures, multiple fetuses, and post pregnancy complications are also covered. Processes and procedures used such as three-dimensional scanning, and other interventional procedures. Emotional and mental conditions for both the maternal patient as well as the technologist are also discussed. Medical and sonographic terminology will be discussed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify, both on diagram and sonographic image, normal and abnormal fetal anatomy.
- Perform basic protocol for second and third trimester sonography.
- Describe the effects of pathophysiology on maternal and fetal organs and organ systems because of teratogen, genetic aberration, and maternal complications.
- Define fetal evaluation process for anomalies and well being and testing methods or protocols used for such testing
- Demonstrate knowledge of risk factors and complications associated with conditions pre and post pregnancy and protocol for evaluation with these conditions.
- Define the pathologic effects in the fetus and surrounding support structures and the sonographic appearance of such.
- Understand the pathophysiologic effects of conditions upon the fetus and maternal patient.
- Define and acquire basic needed images for a sonographic obstetrical exam.
- Demonstrate sonographic techniques, measurement methods, and basic Doppler analysis for the fetus and materal structures used in second and third trimester obstetrical exams.
- Identify the need and proper methods for emotional well being for mother and patients as well as the sonographer.
- Understand the important elements of composing and generating preliminary and final reports using correct terminology
- Understand the important elements of composing and generating preliminary and final reports using correct terminology
- Demonstrate scanning using correct ergonomic techniques
