EXER 203 - Exercise for Special Populations

This course will focus on exercise contraindications and program design modifications for clients with known disease who have been released by their physician for independent supervised exercise training. Students will learn how to determine when medical clearance for exercise is necessary and then professionally communicate with medical personnel to request clearance to participate.  Students will design modified exercise programs consistent with physician recommendations and disease contraindications and apply appropriate overload principles for the client to reach their personal health and wellness goals.  

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  

  1. Discuss the implications of cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic diseases on exercise 
  2. Summarize and evaluate the implications of pregnancy, age, gender, and others on exercise
  3. Demonstrate and apply evidence-based practice for physical activities for special population clients.
  4. Describe the implications of joint disorders and physical disabilities on exercise
  5. Discuss the legal and ethical issues of working with physicians
  6. Screen and evaluate health history forms for prospective clients
  7. Explain and execute the rules regarding protected health information and records and their use in the fitness industry.
  8. Utilize physician release documents to obtain clearance to exercise.
  9. Recognize and evaluate the legal and ethical issues of working with individuals with pre-existing medical conditions
  10. Design exercise programs based on typical physician recommendations for modifiable health conditions.

 

MAJOR LAB COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Design, demonstrate and lead exercise instruction based on physician recommendations and contraindications for various health conditions 
  2. Instruct appropriate exercise modifications for individual special population clients 
  3. Measure, observe, interpret, and instruct standardized fitness assessments for special population clients 
  4. Design and instruct a special population client through a personalized safe and effective weekly exercise training session 
  5. Utilize non-verbal cues essential to safe and appropriate exercise instruction to determine appropriate exercise modifications to meet individualized program outcomes.
  6. Provide physical demonstration of exercise utilizing non-verbal cues for immediate response to improve exercise safety and outcomes during a client exercise session.
