EXER 204 - Health Coaching for Wellness and Behavioral Change

This course will focus on the cognitive and behavioral techniques and strategies available to help increase the level of motivation and self-efficacy in individuals with chronic health conditions to make positive lifestyle changes to manage chronic conditions.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Utilize effective communication strategies to build and sustain relationships with clients.
  2. Identify and describe the four guiding principles of Motivational Interviewing
  3. Demonstrate active listening skills, ask powerful questions, and use effective dialogue and feedback techniques to provide maximum benefit to clients.
  4. Construct motivational interview strategies to apply in “mock” client sessions utilizing prepared case study scenarios.
  5. Identify actual and perceived barriers that contribute to the resistance of lifestyle change.
  6. Utilize various character strengths to modify barriers to wellness and support change.
  7. Identify and apply goal setting strategies for behavioral change.
  8. Create individual and group structured behavior change strategies for the management of chronic health conditions.
  9. Investigate and apply lifestyle and weight management techniques through physical activity, nutrition, and education initiatives.
  10. Recognize the impact of non-verbal communication on exercise outcomes.
  11. Identify ethical guidelines and core competencies for coaching competency guidelines.
  12. Develop an individualized learning plan for developing, practicing and growing coaching skills.
  13. Develop and practice interview techniques for working with clients.
