HIMT 106 - Healthcare Informatics


PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: HIMT 101 - Introduction to Health Information Technology , HIMT 102 - Health Data Content and Structure , and INFM 109 - Informatics Fundamentals

This course introduces concepts of health information systems such as database design and management, data warehousing, data mining, interoperability for health information exchanges, health information system acquisition and life cycle, health information registries and indices, EHRs, PHRs, information governance, and data stewardship. Students will study the evolution of health information systems including the transition from paper records to electronic records, HIPAA, HITECH, ARRA, and meaningful use. Students will also gain experience utilizing an electronic health record software

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Illustrate policies, regulations, and standards to the management of information.
  2. Describe components of data dictionaries and data sets.
  3. Evaluate data dictionaries and data sets for compliance with governance standards.
  4. Apply privacy and security strategies to health information.
  5. Identify compliance requirements throughout the health information life cycle.
  6. Apply health informatics concepts to the management of health information.
  7. Utilize technologies for health information management.
  8. Identify standards for the exchange of health information.
  9. Manage data within a database system.
  10. Identify the components of risk management related to health information management.
  11. Describe consumer engagement activities.
