Introduces Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding as applied in facility and physician perspectives. Includes general content, coding guidelines, and the role of CPT coding in healthcare reimbursement. Applies codes to basic medical and surgical services including the use of modifiers. Ethical coding and compliance issues are emphasized.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: In addition to meeting the above AHIMA competencies and knowledge clusters for this course, students will be able to do the following at completion of this course:
- Utilize technologies for health information management.
- Determine diagnosis and procedure codes and grouping in accordance with official guidelines.
- Evaluate compliance with regulatory requirements and reimbursement methodologies.
- Comply with ethical coding practices.
