Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use. Students are introduced to the fundamental theories and concepts of human computer interaction. This course examines the various uses of information and information technology and how it involves the study, planning, and design of the interaction between humans and computers. Students will explore information representation and data visualization. Students will be introduced to the analysis of human factors and the design of computer application interfaces including a perspective of HCI designs in historical, current, and future technologies.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Discuss the basic physiological, perceptual, and cognitive components of human learning and memory and their impact on human-computer interaction.
- Investigate historical aspects of HCI and examine their impact upon society.
- Examine the relationship between ergonomics and human-computer interaction.
- Differentiate between user experience and usability.
- Assess design and evaluation techniques used to develop successful interactive technologies.
- Analyze HCI problems from a technical, cognitive, and functional perspective.
- Discuss why data visualization is an important part of human-computer interaction.
- Explore the use of multimodal interfaces for system interaction.
- Compare and contrast paradigms of HCI research and development (e.g. evaluation, description, and invention).
- Describe special considerations in designing user interfaces for various demographics (e.g. age, visual, physical, audio limitations).
- Design and develop interactive user interfaces for user input and information display.
- Perform usability analyses evaluating the quality of user interfaces and displays.
