MEAS 238 - Clinical I


PREREQUISITES: MEAS 110 - Introduction to Clinical Practice , HLHS 101 - Medical Terminology APHY 102 - Anatomy and Physiology II , and MEAS Program Chair approval

This course provides instruction in the clinical aspects of the ambulatory healthcare setting. Includes vital signs, asepsis, sterilization, and treatment room procedures.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1.  Accurately Measure and record: (IP1)
    1. blood pressure
    2. temperature
    3. pulse
    4. respirations
    5. height
    6. weight (adult)
    7. oxygen saturation (IP1 i.)
  2. Provide up-to-date documentation of provider/professional level CPR (IP12)
  3. Identify the following as practiced within an ambulatory care setting: (IIIC3)
    1. medical asepsis
    2. surgical asepsis
  4. Identify methods of controlling the growth of microorganisms (IIIC4)
  5. Prepare items for autoclaving (IIIP4)
  6. Perform sterilization procedures (IIIP5)
  7. Prepare a sterile field (IIIP6)
  8. Perform within a sterile field (IIIP7)
  9. Identify the role of the medical assistant as a patient navigator. (VC10)
  10. Coach patients regarding: (VP3)
    1. Office policies
    2. medical encounters
  11. Document patient care accurately in the medical record (XP3)
  12. Demonstrate tactfulness (A7)

  • Wrap Items for Autoclaving
  • Perform Sterilization Techniques
  • Dispose of Bio hazardous Materials
  • Practice Standard Precautions
  • Obtain Vital Signs
  • Obtain and Record Patient History
  • Prepare and Maintain Examination and Treatment Area
  • Prepare Patient for and Assist with Routine Exams (Specialty Exams, Clinical II)
  • Prepare Patient for and Assist with Procedures and Treatment (Minor Office Surgery, Clinical II)
  • Recognize and Respond to Verbal Communication
  • Recognize and Respond to Nonverbal Communication
  • Identify and Respond to Issues of Confidentiality
  • Perform within Legal and Ethical Boundaries
  • Establish and Maintain the Medical Record
  • Document Appropriately
