This course provides a continuation of clinical skills and theory, which allows the student to become familiar with the following clinical duties: Medications, EKG’s, pulmonary function testing, and other technical skills required in the ambulatory healthcare setting.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify appropriate vaccinations based on an immunization schedule (IC13)
- Accurately Measure and record: (IP1)
- weight (infant) (IP1 f.)
- length (infant) (IP1 g.)
- head circumference (infant) (IP1 h.)
- Perform the following procedures: (IP2)
- electrocardiography (IP2 a.)
- pulmonary function testing (IP2 d.)
- Perform patient screening using established protocols (IP3)
- Verify the rules of medication administration: (IP4)
- right patient
- right medication
- right dose
- right route
- right time
- right documentation
- Select proper sites for administering parenteral medication (IP5)
- Administer oral medications (IP6)
- Administer parenteral (excluding IV) medications (IP7)
- Instruct and prepare a patient for a procedure or a treatment (IP8)
- Assist provider with a patient exam (IP9)
- Document on a growth chart (IIP3)
- Perform wound care (IIIP8)
- Perform dressing change (IIIP9)
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills (A1)
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include - - Practice standard precautions
- Perform electrocardiograms
- Perform pulmonary function testing
- Perform in-person screening
- Review vital signs
- Obtain and record patient history
- Prepare patient for and assist with specialty exams
- Prepare patient for and assist with procedures, treatments, and minor office surgery
- Apply pharmacology principles to prepare and administer oral and parenteral medications
- Maintain medication and immunization records
