Presents principles, procedures and clinicopathologic correlations in routine chemical analysis of the blood and other body fluids. Provides laboratory experiences in basic methods, selected to develop routine analytical abilities and to promote the ability to recognize sources of error.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Comply with all institutional safety policies, OSHA, and Bloodborne Pathogen Standards.
  2. Use established criteria to identify and evaluate specimen acceptability.
  3. Correlate knowledge of body chemistry levels under healthy or abnormal conditions with disease conditions .
  4. Assess pre-analytic and analytic factors that can affect patient results.
  5. Record and report results accurately, indicating normal and abnormal values.
  6. Evaluate quality control results and note trends, shifts, and invalid results.
  7. Discuss trends in clinical chemistry instrumentation and technology.
  8. Perform routine maintenance and chemical analyses on instrumentation.
  9. Explain the principles of the above procedures and describe the clinical importance of abnormalities.
  10. Demonstrate accuracy in the analysis of chemistry specimens for the following types of procedures utilizing only necessary supplies and within a predetermined/reasonable amount of time:
    1. Reagent preparation and use
    2. Color spectrophotometric
    3. Coulometric titration
    4. Enzymatic
    5. Electrophoretic
    6. Other test procedures as available
