MTTC 217 - Introduction to the Swiss Lathe


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 0XX and MATH 0XX and MTTC 209 - CNC Lathe Programming .

Introduces multiple axis CNC machining on the Swiss style lathe. This course allows students to explore concepts surrounding operation, setup, programming, and quality as applied to the Swiss style of CNC machine.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the differences between CNC turret style lathes and Swiss lathes. (a,f)
  2. Consistently demonstrate proper programming format and techniques including G-codes and M-codes unique to the Swiss. (a)
  3. Demonstrate proper techniques in selecting stock materials and preparing them for the Swiss lathe. (a,c,i)
  4. Show competence in process sequencing for successful manufacture. (a)
  5. Show competence in setup of tooling for successful machining from part print. (a,i)
  6. Show competence in choice of bar size, shape, holding, and feeding methods. (a,i)
  7. Troubleshoot program and machining problems. (a,i)
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of basic machining concepts including machinability as they relate to the Swiss lathe. (a,f)
