MTTC 242 - CNC Machining


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 0XX and MATH 0XX, and MTTC 101 - Introduction to Machining , and MTTC 208 - CNC Mill Programming , and MTTC 209 - CNC Lathe Programming .

Introduces and instructs the student in all aspects of Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machining. The student will program, set up and operate CNC mills and lathes utilizing CAD/CAM for fixture and part design and verification. Students continually improve programming, set up and cycle time efficiency. Students inspect and document the quality of production parts and compare their performance with an industry benchmark for each project. This course incorporates mandatory certification assessment for the National Institute of Metalworking Skills CNC Turning: Programming Setup and Operations CNC Milling: Programming Setup & Operations Certification.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate proper CNC programming skills including editing of both G&M code as well as CAM process files. (a)
  2. Demonstrate ability to optimize processes and programming code for efficiency and performance. (a,i)
  3. Demonstrate continuous improvement of programming, set-up, and cycle times. (a,i)

Note: Letters following objective correspond to ABET Outcomes.

COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • Introduction to 2 and 3-dimensional CAD/CAM (Mastercam) using wire frame, surface and solid modeling techniques.
  • Design jigs and fixtures for part production, and unique special projects for production.
  • Program (manually and CAM), set-up and operate various CNC controls and machinery.
  • Part set-up, routings and quality control documentation.
  • Tips and techniques for improving set-up and operation of part production.
  • Import, and manipulate part (CAD) data part production.
  • Reverse engineering for inspection and part production.

 
GRADING POLICY
Grading Rubric for NIMS Certification Exams:

The embedded NIMS exams will be graded based on the rubric below.

  • Pass 100%
  • Fail 75%
  • No Take 0%

Each NIMS exam will be weighted as 10% of the final grade.
