Allows the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to provide safe, ethical, culturally competent, and holistic care for geriatric patients and adults experiencing complex alterations in health, within the context of all body systems. Emphasis is placed on the prevention of illness and the maintenance, promotion and restoration of health, as well as the support of death with dignity and implementation of the ordered plan of treatment. The nursing process provides the framework for problem solving and critical thinking in providing nursing care. Leadership activities for practical nurses in the long term care setting are explored.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Apply effective use of technology and standardized, evidence-based practices to support safe and quality patient care. (SLO 2, 3)
- Function effectively within the scope of practice of a practical nurse with inter/intra professional teams to achieve and maintain individualized patient care. (SLO 1)
- Implement individualized care based on patient values, clinical knowledge, and evidence-based practice. (SLO 4)
- Utilize the nursing process to provide ethical, culturally competent and holistic care for older adults experiencing complex alterations in health. (SLO 6)
- Integrate principles of teaching-learning to individuals and/or groups. (SLO 4)
- Demonstrate appropriate communication techniques to interact with patients, their significant others, and members to the inter/intra-professional health care team in a sensitive and respectful manner. (SLO 5)
- Demonstrate responsibility and accountability to function within the role of the practical nurse to provide care to assigned patients in accordance with the scope of practice. (SLO 7)
- Apply principles of growth and development when providing care to adults across the lifespan. (SLO 6)
- Apply leadership concepts including principles of safe delegation, organization, and management of care for groups of older adults. (SLO 8)
- Demonstrate proficiency in dosage calculations and medication administration. (SLO 7)
- Recognize how the profession of nursing is defined and practiced in international and diverse cultural contexts. (SLO 1)
