PHOT 201 - Photography III


PREREQUISITES: PHOT 104 - Photography I , VISC 102 - Raster Graphics I , VISC 201 - Raster Graphics II

Develops color photographic skills using current equipment and techniques using Adobe Photoshop. Encompasses color psychology and aesthetics as well as the physics of light in color photography. Color photographic theory will be emphasized. Appropriate presentation, software options, and sequencing of imagery are stressed, along with historical examples that provide background for understanding the medium.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE:

This class makes use of industry-standard Adobe software. Students will NOT be able to complete the coursework without the use of Adobe software. Only students enrolled in Visual Communications courses that use Adobe software have been assigned an Adobe license. Not all students will have the ability to access Adobe software at home. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the latest Adobe software. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that not every computer can run Adobe software. Verify your system can operate Adobe applications through the Adobe System Requirements website. We highly recommend computers with an Intel core processor, 64-bit support, 8GB of memory (16GB preferred), and a 250GB hard drive. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the minimum system requirements.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Understand photographic color theory.
  2. Understand computer color modes and gamuts and issues surrounding the conversion of rgb to cmyk.
  3. Be able to perform color correction procedures on images from any image input source in a variety of imaging processing programs.
  4. Demonstrate competency in working with various color temperatures, white balance and creative use of white balance.
  5. Employ proper lighting methods for color photography.
  6. Apply theories of color psychology through project completion.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of photographic composition as applied to color photography.
  8. Understand color calibration issues between scanners, cameras, monitors and printers.
  9. Operate a digital camera.
  10. Properly set resolutions on a camera for the end use of the assignment.
  11. Demonstrate knowledge of digital color correction.
  12. Produce a digital color “ring around.”
