TMAS 210 - Biomechanics


PREREQUISITES: TMAS 140 - Therapeutic Massage Training II  and APHY 102 - Anatomy and Physiology II

This course provides a basic understanding of joint movement and body motion. Addresses muscle action, origin and insertion, muscle synergists, antagonists, and evaluations of forces on each body region. Entry-level biomechanical principles with the structure, function and kinesiology of each body region will be explored. Effects of different drugs and supplements on muscles and movement will be studied. Students are introduced to measurement techniques and equipment. Additional supervised table hours of practice outside of class are required and will be determined by the instructor.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Discuss basic physics of joint and body movement.
  2. Analyze the principles of biomechanics.
  3. Demonstrate ability to evaluate gait.
  4. Express the analytical ability to identify and assess restrictions and the impact on the body and apply appropriate release techniques.
  5. Distinguish between the types of muscle contractions.
  6. Isolate muscle dysfunction in joint movement assessment.
  7. Demonstrate correct application of release techniques, including proper body mechanics and client positioning.
  8. Illustrate the agonist, antagonist and synergist muscles for major joints and their roles in joint movement.
  9. Compare normal posture and common postural abnormalities.
  10. Discuss and apply various measurement techniques using different equipment.
  11. Demonstrate the ability to test muscle strength and weakness for improvement documentation.
  12. Apply advanced assessment skills needed for specific biomechanical conditions.
