Provides an understanding of the legal, administrative and clinical responsibilities pertinent to a massage therapy business. Addresses computer usage, marketing, startup costs, financial requirements and office/administrative skills that will allow students to create, promote, and maintain their own business. Students participate in an experiential clinic operation that will allow them to apply their skills and education in a practical setting. The importance of continuing education and research within the profession will be discussed. Students develop a business plan to define their short and long term goals and the requirements of managing a business.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify and design effective methods for time management, client scheduling, and maintenance of the work environment (E 5.1 II)
- Create a business plan or outline an employment strategy, including short and long-term professional goals (E 5.1 III)
- Identify the basic aspects of legal agreements, contracts, employment agreements and professional insurance (E 5.1 IV)
- Identify basic principles of accounting and bookkeeping suitable for various business structures (E 5.1 V)
- Create, maintain and identify legal requirements for retaining client, financial and tax records (E 5.1 VI)
- Demonstrate knowledge of federal, state and local regulations as they pertain to massage therapy and bodywork practice (E 5.1 VII)
- Identify the elements of effective job search and marketing materials (such as resumes, brochures, business cards) (E 5.2 I)
- Identify strategies to develop and maintain a client base (E 5.2 III)
- Discuss the value of continuing education and skill development as a professional (E 6.2 I)
- Explain the value of research to the profession (E 6.3 I)
- Apply bookkeeping, administrative and computer applications, and clinical skills in a practical clinic setting.
- Practice customer care and client service in a practical clinical setting.
- Employ basic management principles in managing day-to-day operations in a practical clinical setting.
- Demonstrate effective interviewing techniques.
- Prepare and present a professional business presentation for the massage practice.
- Discuss basic ownership and business forms and requirements.
- Discuss retirement planning.
