VISC 217 - Graphic Design II


PREREQUISITES: VISC 113 - Typography  and VISC 114 - Graphic Design I  and VISC 115 - Vector Graphics & Pub Design I

Provides intermediate instruction in design for communication. Further explores design theory by applying concepts to achieve meaningful marketing and advertising results. Produces samples for student portfolios, which may include elements or comprehensive projects appropriate to trade/industrial advertising, brochures, flyers, pamphlets, posters, direct mail and/or consumer magazine advertising/branding, etc.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE:

This class makes use of industry-standard Adobe software. Students will NOT be able to complete the coursework without the use of Adobe software. Only students enrolled in Visual Communications courses that use Adobe software have been assigned an Adobe license. Not all students will have the ability to access Adobe software at home. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the latest Adobe software. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that not every computer can run Adobe software. Verify your system can operate Adobe applications through the Adobe System Requirements website. We highly recommend computers with an Intel core processor, 64-bit support, 8GB of memory (16GB preferred), and a 250GB hard drive. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the minimum system requirements.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to solve communication design problems.
  2. Create portfolio quality projects by applying the design process.
  3. Visualize ideas by means of research, thumbnail sketches, and developmental drafts.
  4. Develop marketing concepts by completing creative briefs based on global, corporate and social applications and target audience.
  5. Analyze the product or service in terms of the product life cycle and stage of advertising.
  6. Describe and specify print reproduction criteria by selecting printing inks, paper type, weight, color, folding and binding.
  7. Present and provide feedback to peers, clients, faculty, or advisors in a formal jury presentation.
