CHIN 101 - Mandarin Chinese Level I


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing .

This course is designed for students who have very little or no prior experience in Mandarin Chinese language studies. Students will gain elementary listening, speaking, reading and writing skills using both the Pinyin phonetic system and Simplified Mandarin Chinese characters. Students will build their Mandarin Chinese language skills through the use of essential real-life topics, and an introduction to Mandarin Chinese social and cultural themes.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Reach the middle elementary level in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin Chinese.
  2. Use the Pinyin phonetic system for Mandarin Chinese and write simplified Mandarin Chinese characters; recognize and use approximately 150 words.
  3. Carry out detailed conversations on topics, including introducing oneself and one another; classroom setting; numbers and related applications (time, date, year, month); colors; foods; making phone calls.
  4. Comprehend the meaning of authentic texts linked to every-day situations.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of different values, customs, philosophy and the lifestyles of the various regions and communities of the Mandarin Chinese-speaking world.
