CHIN 102 - Mandarin Chinese Level II PREREQUISITES: CHIN 101 - Mandarin Chinese Level I or demonstrated competency in Mandarin Chinese through appropriate assessment; demonstrated competency in reading and writing through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College . Continues the study of Mandarin Chinese for students who have had the equivalent of one semester of college-level Mandarin Chinese. Introduces additional grammatical structures and vocabulary to further develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills as well as an appreciation of the cultures of the Mandarin Chinese-speaking world.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Reach the high-elementary level in all four skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Continue to practice high-occurrence sentence patterns and begin to develop more complex sentence patterns.
- Recombine learned material to conduct a wider range of daily conversations with more complex sentences.
- Discuss topics including money and shopping, daily schedules, weather, seasons, families and relatives, school, work, professions and hobbies with accurate vocabulary and pronunciation.
- Identify detailed ideas and information in authentic written/printed materials such as newspaper, inline news pieces, brochures, or short notes.
- Continue to pursue accurate Mandarin Chinese pronunciation using the Pinyin system.
- Write at least 250 Mandarin Chinese characters (using Hanzi and/or typing with Mandarin Chinese word processor) and use them to write/type short notes/paragraphs.
- Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and appreciation of various aspects of Mandarin Chinese-speaking cultures, including ethnic majority and minority groups and their customs, and cultural expressions, including calligraphy, painting, music and folk songs, opera and films.
