CPTR 220 - Health Screening and Exercise Program Design Across Populations

Health screening, fitness assessment/evaluation, and exercise programming will be the primary focus of this course. This course will introduce basic program design concepts and rationale for a healthy adult or exercise professional to implement in their exercise regimen that puts an emphasis on cardiovascular training, strength training, flexibility training, and balance. Students will learn techniques to motivate their clients along with the obligations that surround their professional scope of practice. Finally, the course will help qualify students to sit for and pass the American College of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer exam.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Discuss the principles of diagnostic exercise assessment.
  2. Prepare exercise programming based on the recognition of exercise effects on one’s physiology.
  3. Implement proper interpersonal skills to effectively gain information on a symptomatic or asymptomatic client’s health and lifestyle history.
  4. Apply various methods of maximal and submaximal exercise testing, muscular strength and flexibility testing, and body composition measures.
  5. Compare and contrast different measures of exercise testing so one may choose the appropriate testing methods for various populations.
  6. Categorize at-risk clientele in order to develop an appropriate exercise programming for various populations.
  7. Present his or her clinical findings, testing results, and exercise recommendations in an oral and written format.
  8. Explore and understand legal and ethical issues surrounding the scope of practice of a personal trainer.
  9. Demonstrate skills through practical and written examinations.
  10. Complete ACSM CPT Exam preparation.

Fitness assessment techniques and lab application for monitoring:

  • blood pressure
  • heart rate
  • body composition
    • body anthropedic measurements
  • cardiorespiratory endurance
    • through submaximal testing
  • muscular strength
    • principles of 1RM
  • muscular endurance
    • proper ACSM push-up and sit-up crunch testing
  • flexibility and range of motion
    • V-sit and reach

How a client’s current medical state and activity level could influence the testing protocol you implement along with their exercise programming.

How assessment techniques will dictate a client’s individual exercise programming when it comes to the principles of training.
