CPTR 212 - Foundations in Exercise Science


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing ; MATH 080 - Mathematical Principles  
PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: CPTR 205 - Fundamental Kinesiology , and CPTR 206 - Modern Concepts in Exercise & Fitness

The coursework offers students an essential foundation in exercise science. It will display the dynamic and growing field of sport, health, fitness, and wellness along with its disciplines. Students will learn about body systems, biomechanics, basic nutrition, exercise behavior, fitness, wellness, different types of training methodology, and basic sports medicine.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the scientific method and its use in exercise science.
  2. Recognize the role of sport, health, fitness, and wellness from a societal perspective.
  3. Evaluate the role of exercise science in sport, health, fitness, wellness, and medical professions.
  4. Examine career options in sport, health and wellness, fitness, education, and the medical fields.
  5. Identify disciplines related to exercise science and examine each:
    1. Exercise physiology
    2. Fitness
    3. Biomechanics
    4. Coaching
    5. Sport Psychology & Sociology
  6. Research current topics in exercise science and lifestyle modification.
  7. Differentiate between physical and psychological needs pertaining to fitness throughout a population such as: motivation, metabolic needs, physical limitations, self-efficacy, current fitness level, and health status.
  8. Distinguish the difference between health, wellness, and fitness.
