CPTR 206 - Modern Concepts in Exercise & Fitness


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing , and MATH 080 - Mathematical Principles

This course is an introduction to basic exercise program design and its role in health and wellness planning. It will emphasize the importance of client health evaluation prior to the engagement of moderate to rigorous activity. Course work will illustrate how this evaluation process will benefit and influence exercise program design.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify the difference between physical activity and exercise programming.
  2. Define behavioral theories that may affect the implementation of exercise programming.
  3. Implement goal setting techniques that are used to enhance/modify exercise programming through objectivity.
  4. Identify the components of physical fitness.
  5. Summarize the benefits of each component of physical fitness in maintaining good health.
  6. Demonstrate basic techniques used to assess physical fitness components.
  7. Apply the basic principles of training that govern exercise prescription, such as: frequency, intensity, duration, and type.
  8. Explain how periodization, progression, overload, volume, and recovery are manipulated within various training programs.
  9. Demonstrate knowledge through projects which apply concepts and skills learned in laboratory sessions for self and others.
  10. Develop a comprehensive, safe, and effective exercise program for oneself and others based on needs, goals, and assessments obtained in class and lab experiences.

Basic fitness assessment techniques and protocols for monitoring:

  • Cardio respiratory endurance
  • Muscular strength and endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Body composition

Principles of training

  • FITT

Exercise programming based on pre-activity evaluations

Application of these principles to case scenarios
