Allows for the refinement of clinical skills and application of technology and current procedural practices of the dental hygienist with emphasis on self- evaluation and quality assurance. Students are also expected to demonstrate more efficient time management skills so they are prepared to enter the workforce.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Select, obtain, and interpret diagnostic information, recognizing its advantages and limitations
- Recognize predisposing and etiologic risk factors that require intervention to prevent disease.
- Obtain, review, and update a complete medical, family, social, and dental history.
- Perform a comprehensive examination using clinical, radiographic, periodontal, dental charting, and other data collection procedure and assess the patient’s needs.
- Establish a planned sequence of care (education, clinical and evaluation) based on dental hygiene diagnosis; identified oral conditions; potential problems; etiologic and risk factors; and available treatment modalities.
