HIMT 203 - Advanced ICD Coding


PREREQUISITES: HIMT 101 - Introduction to Health Information Technology ; HIMT 102 - Health Data Content and Structure ; HIMT 200 - Basic ICD Coding  
PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: HIMT 210 - Pathophysiology and Pharmacology

Includes International Classification of Diseases (ICD) assignment and sequencing of codes in accordance with approved guidelines and requires the student to apply and expand the knowledge gained from the Basic ICD Coding course with completing more advanced cases utilizing encoder software. The student will develop critical-thinking skills by using current references to research coding questions and issues.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Utilize technologies for health information management.
  2. Determine diagnosis and procedure codes and grouping in accordance with official guidelines.
  3. Describe components of revenue cycle management and clinical documentation improvement.
  4. Evaluate compliance with regulatory requirements and reimbursement methodologies.
  5. Identify current regulations and guidelines in clinical classification systems regarding present on admission, and UHDDS guidelines.
  6. Comply with ethical coding practices.
  7. Develop physician queries to resolve data and coding discrepancies for clinical documentation improvement activities.
