Examines the role of the patient care technician as a member of the inter/intra-professional disciplinary team in today’s health care systems. Explores the patient care technician’s role in providing for basic physiological, psychosocial, cultural, intellectual, and spiritual needs of patients. Introduces fundamental principles of therapeutic communication and teaching/learning. Provides a basic understanding of the administrative duties of the disease process and responsibilities pertinent in the acute health care setting.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Identify and describe basic physiological, psychosocial, cultural, intellectual, and spiritual components of patient needs to improve quality and safety of patient care.
- Demonstrates the ability to safely discontinue peripheral IV’s.
- Explain the difference of clean and sterile/aseptic technique.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform dressing changes.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform ostomy care.
- Describe the 5 Rights of Delegation.
- Demonstrate ability to prioritize patient care.
- Identify and report situations involving substance abuse.
- Identify and report situations involving the suspicion of domestic violence/intimate violence.
- Identify therapeutic communication practices in the delivery of quality patient care.
- Describe Joint Commission patient safety guidelines.
- Describe fundamental principles of documentation and use of technology including the electronic health record.
- Document patient care using EHR.
- Describe the disease process and define the top 10 diseases in the acute setting.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
Provision of basic patient care under the direction of nursing staff
Appropriate set up of equipment and safely perform patient care relating to the care of a patient requiring:
- O2 therapy modalities
- skin breakdown measures
- compression boots
- bed scale weight
- feeding tube
- orthotic or prosthetic devices
- safe removal of peripheral IV’s
- dressing changes
- ostomy needs
Monitor and accurately recording electronic vital signs and intake and output
Admission, transfer, and discharge responsibilities
Assist in the provision of rehabilitation care needs
Perform dressing changes and identifying pertinent wound characteristics
First aid and rapid response conditions
Vital signs
Identifying pain
Documentation of patient care using EHR
Use of technology in health care
Substance abuse
Abuse/neglect
