HSPS 167 - Fire Fighter II


PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: HSPS 165 - Fire Fighter I

A companion course to Fire Fighter I and expands upon the principles and techniques of firefighting. Students will study fire protection systems, firefighter safety and survival. Students will also learn what fire is, the chemical hazards of combustion and related by- products of fire. Fire department organization, administration, operations, and basic strategies and tactics will be covered.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to meet or exceed the Job Performance Requirements (JPR’s) as outlined in NFPA 1001 for Fire Fighter II which include but are not limited to:

  1. Application of automatic sprinkler systems.
  2. Discuss and demonstrate personal safety as related to all areas of NFPA 1500.
  3. Demonstrate the use of all personal protective equipment in a timed manner.
  4. Explain fire behavior and the chemical reaction of pyrolysis.
  5. Describe/demonstrate forcible entry techniques.
  6. Demonstrate the proper use of SCBA in a timed manner.
  7. Crawl through the maze under simulated fire conditions.
  8. Discuss and describe building construction concepts as they relate to the fire service.
  9. Demonstrate basic rescue and extrication techniques.
  10. List the principles of water supply hydraulics.
  11. Demonstrate the proper care and use of selected fire hoses.
  12. Demonstrate how to develop and use fire streams.
  13. Demonstrate the ability to understand NIMS.
  14. Communications with the public and within the fire service.
  15. Mount a ladder and ventilate a roof with selected tools.
  16. Recognize and select tools related to the fire service.
