HUMS 108 - Theories of Aging

Covers the major behavioral changes in adulthood and aging. Students explore their own feelings about aging as well as the attitudes of society.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Define and discuss personal and cultural attitudes toward aging.
  2. Identify social roles pertaining to the elderly.
  3. Examine the impact of aging on interpersonal relationships, family, marriage, and sexuality.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of personality changes associated with aging.
  5. Examine issues involving work, retirement and leisure activity.
  6. Describe cognition functioning and dementia in the elderly.
  7. Identify community agencies offering services to the elderly.
  8. Examine and discuss issues of concern to the elderly, such as housing, transportation, and medical care.
  9. Identify and evaluate factors influencing the economic status of the elderly.
  10. Understand and identify physical changes associated with aging.
  11. Demonstrate an understanding of sensory changes and the impact on daily functioning.
  12. Review and compare various models of death and dying.
