Covers the major behavioral changes in adulthood and aging. Students explore their own feelings about aging as well as the attitudes of society.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Define and discuss personal and cultural attitudes toward aging.
- Identify social roles pertaining to the elderly.
- Examine the impact of aging on interpersonal relationships, family, marriage, and sexuality.
- Demonstrate an understanding of personality changes associated with aging.
- Examine issues involving work, retirement and leisure activity.
- Describe cognition functioning and dementia in the elderly.
- Identify community agencies offering services to the elderly.
- Examine and discuss issues of concern to the elderly, such as housing, transportation, and medical care.
- Identify and evaluate factors influencing the economic status of the elderly.
- Understand and identify physical changes associated with aging.
- Demonstrate an understanding of sensory changes and the impact on daily functioning.
- Review and compare various models of death and dying.
