HUMS 206 - Group Process and Skills


PREREQUISITES: HUMS 101 - Introduction to Human Services  and HUMS 102 - Helping Relationship Techniques  and HUMS 103 - Interviewing and Assessment .

Studies group dynamics, issues and behavior. Includes group functioning and leadership, guidelines on working effectively with a co-leader, and practical ways of evaluating the group processes.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Evaluate guidelines for establishing a code of conduct for a group.
  2. Discuss how to recruit members for a group.
  3. Examine the difference between open and closed groups.
  4. Examine group characteristics, dynamics, and stages.
  5. Examine and describe problem behaviors and difficult group members.
  6. Analyze and give examples of how to open and close a group.
  7. Examine characteristics of groups in transitional and working stages.
  8. Practice the role of the facilitator and determine one’s own leadership style.
  9. Develop group leadership skills.
  10. Discuss transference and countertransference among group members.
  11. Evaluate a group experience.
