PREREQUISITES: HUMS 101 - Introduction to Human Services , HUMS 102 - Helping Relationship Techniques , HUMS 113 - Theories of Substance Abuse and Addiction  or CRIM 171 - Drugs and Justice .

An examination of the special issues, populations, and treatment modalities specific to substance abuse counseling. Course meets some of the academic requirements toward state addictions licensure, and may meet the educational requirements from other industry certifications.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify issues specific to substance abuse counseling.
  2. Identify the needs of special populations in substance abuse counseling.
  3. Examine appropriate assessment methods in treatment and counseling.
  4. Discussion of relevant case studies.
