HUMS 113 - Theories of Substance Abuse and Addiction


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  and ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing , or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing  or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing .

Introductory course that provides basic information about the problems of alcohol and other drug abuse. Explores symptoms and effects of abuse and dependence on individuals, families, and society. Course meets some of the academic requirements toward state addictions licensure, and may meet the educational requirements from other industry certifications.”

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the nature of substance abuse and dependence.
  2. Understand the motivation for using alcohol and other drugs.
  3. Identify the major classifications of drugs and the physiological, psychological, and sociological effects of their use.
  4. Recognize the etiology, symptoms, and treatment models of chemical addiction.
  5. Understand the effects of chemical dependence on the family.
  6. Identify laws pertaining to the major classifications of drugs.
  7. Recognize the effects of substance abuse on fetal development.
  8. Identify the effects and patterns of substance abuse in different populations.
  9. Examine the use of psychotherapeutic drugs in our culture and evaluate its impact on our society.
  10. Assess the pharmacological effects of psychoactive drugs on the central nervous system.
  11. Compare the CNS naturally occurring psychoactive chemicals with those used illicitly.
  12. Determine the effects of illicit drug use on the various organs of the body.
