MEAS 238 - Clinical I


PREREQUISITES: MEAS 110 - Introduction to Clinical Practice , HLHS 101 - Medical Terminology APHY 102 - Anatomy and Physiology II , and MEAS Program Chair approval

This course provides instruction in the clinical aspects of the ambulatory healthcare setting. Includes vital signs, asepsis, sterilization, and treatment room procedures.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. List principles and steps of professional /provider CPR (IC13)
  2. Measure and record: (IP1)
    1. Blood pressure
    2. Temperature
    3. Pulse
    4. Respirations
    5. Height
    6. Weight
    7. Pulse oximetry
  3. Produce up-to-date documentation of provider/professional level CPR (IP12)
  4. Incorporate critical thinking skills when performing patient assessment (IA1)
  5. Define the following as practiced within an ambulatory care setting: (IIIC3)
    1. medical asepsis
    2. surgical asepsis
  6. Identify methods of controlling the growth of microorganisms (IIIC4)
  7. Prepare items for autoclaving (IIIP4)
  8. Perform sterilization procedures (IIIP5)
  9. Prepare a sterile field (IIIP6)
  10. Perform within a sterile field (IIIP7)
  11. Define coaching a patient as it relates to: (VC6)

    5. Adaptations relevant to individual patient needs
  12. Define the patient navigator (VC12)
  13. Describe the role of the medical assistant as a patient navigator (VC13)
