MEAS 239 - Clinical II


PREREQUISITES: MEAS 238 - Clinical I , HLHS 101 - Medical Terminology , and Program Chair Approval
PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: MEAS 218 - Pharmacology

This course provides a continuation of clinical skills and theory, which allows the student to become familiar with the following clinical duties: Medications, EKG’s, pulmonary function testing, and other technical skills required in the ambulatory healthcare setting.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Measure and record: (IP1)
    1. Length (infant)
    2. Head circumference
  2. Perform: (IP2)
    1. Electrocardiography
    2. Pulmonary function
  3. Perform patient screening using established protocols (IP3)
  4. Verify the rules of medication administration: (IP4)
    1. right patient
    2. right medication
    3. right dose
    4. right route
    5. right time
    6. right documentation
  5. Select proper sites for administering parenteral medication (IP5)
  6. Administer oral medications (IP6)
  7. Administer parenteral (excluding IV) medications (IP7)
  8. Instruct and prepare a patient for a procedure or a treatment (IP8)
  9. Assist provider with a patient exam (IP9)
  10. Incorporate critical thinking skills when performing patient care (IA2)
  11. Show awareness of a patient’s concerns related to the procedure being performed (IA3)
  12. Perform wound care (IIIP8)
  13. Perform dressing change (IIIP9)
  14. Explain to a patient the rationale for performance of a procedure (VA4)
  15. Document on a growth chart (IIP4)


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • Practice standard precautions
  • Perform electrocardiograms
  • Perform pulmonary function testing
  • Perform in-person screening
  • Review vital signs
  • Obtain and record patient history
  • Prepare patient for and assist with specialty exams
  • Prepare patient for and assist with procedures, treatments, and minor office surgery
  • Apply pharmacology principles to prepare and administer oral and parenteral medications
  • Maintain medication and immunization records
