This course is designed to provide the student with the study of applications and clinical practices of microbiology found in a clinical laboratory.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

Demonstrate and comply with proper safety procedures for the collection, handling, analysis, and disposal of microbiological specimens.
Evaluate specimen acceptability as indicated by testing to be performed.
Perform analytical tests on blood, body fluids, and tissues.
Recognize factors that affect procedures and results and take appropriate actions within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated.
Monitor quality control within predetermined limits and take appropriate corrective actions when QC data falls outside of established ranges.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments or refer to appropriate sources for repairs.
Apply basic scientific principles in learning new techniques and procedures.
Relate laboratory findings to common disease processes.
Demonstrate competency in the principles of microbiological testing to include stat processing, confirmatory testing, and reflex testing.
Integrate the use of appropriate and effective written, oral and nonverbal communication with patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public in a clinical setting.
Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior with patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public in a clinical setting.
