This course is designed to study and practice the analytical aspects of clinical chemistry in the hospital laboratory.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate and comply with proper safety procedures for the collection, handling, analysis, and disposal of Chemistry specimens.
- Evaluate specimen acceptability as indicated by testing to be performed.
- Perform analytical tests on blood and body fluids.
- Recognize factors that affect procedures and results and take appropriate actions within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated.
- Monitor quality control within predetermined limits and take appropriate corrective actions when QC data falls outside of established ranges.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments or refer to appropriate sources for repairs.
- Apply basic scientific principles in learning new techniques and procedures.
- Relate laboratory findings to common disease processes.
- Demonstrate competency in the principles of blood and body fluid testing to include stat processing, confirmatory testing, and reflex testing.
- Integrate the use of appropriate and effective written, oral and nonverbal communication with patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public in a clinical setting.
- Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior with patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public in a clinical setting.
