MORT 101 - Grief Psychology for Funeral Service

An examination of theory and management of grief, the process of mourning, and the value of the funeral service in bereavement. Grief reactions according to age and special types of loss will be examined. In addition, the course will cover the funeral director’s professional responsibilities to the families he or she serves.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Understand the values and purposes of the funeral rite for the family and friends.
  2. Recognize the typical reaction and responses experienced during the emotion of grief.
  3. Describe the theories of grief.
  4. Understand issues relating to children and death.
  5. Explain how grief affects the functioning of the family.
  6. Recognize the difference between grief counseling and grief therapy and understand the limitations for the funeral director.
  7. Differentiate between the types and styles of counseling.
  8. Recognize the major goals of counseling as well as the functions of the counselor.
  9. Understand the basic skills and techniques utilized in counseling and their application to Funeral Service.
  10. Recognize the pre-need, at-need, and post-funereal counseling opportunities in the community.
  11. Recognize and understand their personal resources for coping with loss.
  12. Recognize when to make referrals to the appropriate community resources.
